Multisource feedback

BCCNP in 2017 introduced multisource feedback as a mandatory quality assurance requirement. Every registered nurse and nurse practitioner in B.C. must participate once every five years, in order to meet their quality assurance requirements with the college.

Is it mandatory?

Yes. Multisource feedback is a quality assurance requirement. Every RN and NP in B.C. must complete multisource feedback during their assigned year.

Why did you choose multisource feedback?

Your colleagues have a unique perspective on your nursing practice. By working with you every day, they see where you excel and where you could improve.

Multisource feedback is one way to help nursesidentify where to focus their professional development via confidential feedback, presented in a comprehensive report.

How does it work?

Participants use the My Professional Plan application to invite their colleagues by email to provide them with confidential feedback via an online questionnaire. Nurses are encouraged to invite both nurse and non-nurse colleagues to provide feedback on their practice.

Participants have 30 calendar days to invite and receive feedback from their colleagues. Note that this 30 days does not include completing and evaluating the Action Plan. We recommend inviting a minimum of five colleagues to provide feedback. All feedback is confidential. Nurses will not be able to identify their colleagues' individual feedback.

After the 30-day feedback period has ended

At the end of the 30 calendar days, all the feedback will be aggregated and sent to individual participants in a confidential report, accessible via My Professional Plan. The next step is using the report for professional development planning.

Using the report

Participants will then use the feedback report to help identify areas of their practice they want to improve, and guide their activities. Participants have until Oct. 31 of that year to develop, implement, and evaluate two or more actions using the Action Plan in My Professional Plan. Completing and evaluating an Action Plan is mandatory.

Seeking feedback

Between each five-year requirement, nurses are still expected to independently gather colleague feedback as part of meeting their annual quality assurance requirements. You will need to attest during registration renewal that you have sought feedback, so don't skip this step just because it's not your assigned year to do multisource feedback.

What is the value of multisource feedback?

Multisource feedback helps nurses in their professional development and self-regulation, by making formalized feedback from colleagues and others available, and generating opportunities for the nurses to improve their practice and meet high practice standards.

How will it help nurses improve?

Each participant's personalized multisource feedback report can help :

  • Confirm key areas of strength in professional practice
  • Identify areas for growth through self-reflection and colleague feedback
  • Identify gaps between how colleagues rate you and how you rate yourself: this helps identify ‘blind spots’
  • Assess progress and improvements over time
  • Build a robust professional development plan, based on your individualized results

By participating in more rigorous quality assurance activities like multisource feedback, nurses demonstrate to the public and other health professionals their commitment to quality improvement, accountability and ongoing professional development.
