Competency assessment

COVID-19 pandemic update (May 5, 2020):

BCCNP is not currently referring applicants to NCAS, as they have temporarily cancelled all assessments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once NCAS resumes testing, we will refer you; NCAS will contact you directly when assessments are available. For updates, please visit www.ncasbc.ca.

Most internationally-educated applicants will have to complete a competency assessment after the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) submits their advisory report. Nursing education and practice differs from one country to the next. The competency assessment evaluates your skills against competencies required for entry-level practice in the province.  If gaps are identified, it will assist in determining what transitional education is required.

Please note: BCCNP must refer applicants to NCAS before they can register to complete the assessment.

NCAS assessment

Competency assessments for BCCNP are completed through the Nursing Community Assessment Service (NCAS) and involves three components that enable internationally educated nurses to demonstrate their nursing experience and competencies that may not be reflected in an assessment of their education alone. They are:

  • Computer-based assessment
  • Simulation lab assessment and Oral assessment

The computer-based assessment can be written in more than 100 countries around the world. The simulation lab and oral assessments are both offered at Langara College in Vancouver. For information about the three components, please visit www.ncasbc.ca.

Prep programs for Competency Assessment

BCCNP does not approve any schools or programs that state they help prepare applicants for competency assessment.

If you take preparation courses or other courses before completing the NCAS competency assessment and competency gaps are identified through the assessment process, you may need to do additional coursework as directed by BCCNP.
