Provisional

Provisional registration may be granted to eligible applicants who wish to work while meeting their outstanding registration requirements, such as passing the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination (RPNCE).

Those granted provisional RPN registration are assigned specific conditions that must be met to be eligible for practising RPN registration.

Not planning to practice psychiatric nursing in BC before gaining full registration? You don't need provisional RPN registration.

How to apply

You will be given the option of applying for provisional RPN registration when you complete your application for registration.

Eligibility to apply: Failing the RPNCE

Applicants who have failed the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada exam (RPNCE) two or more times are not eligible for provisional RPN registration until they have passed the exam.

Application processing time and delays

When BCCNP has received evidence that you have completed all the requirements of provisional RPN registration, status will be granted within 10 business days.

Processing of your application for provisional RPN registration may be delayed if:

  • Your application or other submitted documents are incomplete
  • You have had a criminal charge, conviction or pardon
  • A discipline, competence or fitness to practice issue has been identified.

In come cases, applications require review by the BCCNP Registration Committee to determine an applicant's eligibility for registration. You will be informed if your application requires this review.

Confirm your registration status before you work as a provisional RPN

Before you work as a provisional RPN, it is important to confirm your registration status to ensure you are legally entitled to practice. You can do this by looking yourself up on the nurse verification tool.

 Practising as a provisional RPN

If you are granted provisional RPN registration, you must:

  • Satisfy BCCNP's RPN Standards of Practice, which include Professional Standards, Scope of Practice Standards and Practice Standards.
  • Abide by all conditions placed on your registration.
Provisional registration expiry and renewal

Provisional RPN registrants are typically given 12 months to meet all conditions on their provisional registration. Those who do not do so are not eligible to extend their provisional RPN registration.

Use of title

If you are granted provisional status, you may use the following titles:

  • Registered psychiatric nurse (provisional)
  • Provisional RPN
  • Provisional nurse
  • RPN (P)

Breaching conditions

Applicants are informed of the conditions on their registration before their provisional RPN registration is issued.

If you breach any of your provisional RPN registration conditions, you may be referred to BCCNP Professional Conduct Review. You may also be required to suspend your psychiatric nursing practice.

Converting to practising RPN registration

Upon meeting all assigned conditions, your provisional RPN registration will automatically be converted to practising RPN registration. You will receive an email confirming your change in status.
