Nursing students: Participating in the COVID-19 pandemic response

Mar 16, 2020

Note that this announcement was updated March 26, 2020, to reflect a change to payment requirements. We thank students for their patience during this rapidly evolving situation.

On March 16, 2020, the Minister of Health requested that we make temporary emergency registration available to individuals that meet the criteria in order to assist in the COVID-19 pandemic response. While B.C. nursing students are not eligible for temporary emergency registration, BCCNP will be taking the following actions to ensure that students are able to participate in pandemic response as required.

Fast-tracking employed student applications

BC nursing students who are not currently registered with BCCNP may apply to become an employed student registrant by following the instructions on our website. All applicants will need to pay the application, registration, and CNPS fees to obtain ESN or ESPN registration.

BCCNP will refund the application fee and a pro-rated registration fee for the duration of the pandemic. Refunds will be processed once the COVID-19 pandemic is declared ended.

Reinstating former ESNs and ESPNs

Individuals who have held ESN or ESPN registration in the past can reinstate their ESN or ESPN registration. They do this by logging into their BCCNP account and applying for ESN/ESPN registration. BCCNP will refund the application fee and a pro-rated registration fee to those who obtain ESN or ESPN registration during the pandemic.

The requirement for employers and instructors to complete form 10.1 has been suspended for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, BCCNP will still accept and process any fully completed form 10.1s which can be uploaded with the application.

Important information: Emergency registration and application details

  • In both scenarios above, registration will be valid until Feb. 28, 2021.
  • BCCNP has waived the requirement for a completed form 10.1 as part of the application process. However, applicants must be currently enrolled in a BCCNP recognized nursing program and have an employer in order to qualify for ESN/ESPN registration. Nursing schools and employers can confirm enrollment and employment by contacting BCCNP at register@bccnp.ca. BCCNP will work directly with employers to verify applicants' employment status.
  • Applicants must to provide a pdf or photo of two current and valid identification documents (one with photo). We are currently waiving the requirement that documents be notarized as most notary and lawyer offices are closed.
