LPN registration renewal: What you need to know

Oct 11, 2018

Registration renewal for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) starts on November 1. This year, we’ve streamlined the application and made a few changes - here’s a few things you need to know for renewal this year:

  1. Practice hours requirement in effect – count your practice hours!

The quality assurance practice requirement takes effect this year for LPN registrants. In order to meet it, you must have practiced a minimum of 1,125 LPN hours between 2014 and 2018. If you do not meet this requirement, you’ll be unable to renew and work as a practising LPN.

Want to check your hours reported to-date? Not sure which hours can be counted? Don't think you have enough hours to renew? Visit the LPN practice hours page for more info.
  2. Jurisprudence

If 2018 was your Jurisprudence exam year, you must complete this requirement before the renewal period opens. If 2016 or 2017 was your Jurisprudence year and you still haven’t successfully completed the Jurisprudence exam, you will not be able to access an online application for renewal until you have met this requirement. If you have questions, contact us at
  3. Payment options

Payment options have been updated. The biggest change: money orders will no longer be accepted. This decision was made  because the practice of using money orders has led some registrants to practice without meeting the requirements set out in our bylaws, because their payment has not been processed in the time. To find out what your payment options are, visit the fees page (under payment options and receipts).
  4. Criminal record re-check – no payment necessary

The cost of criminal record checks and rechecks are now included in your registration fee. If you are due for a re-check, you will be asked to consent to a re-check on your renewal application. We’ll take care of the rest and will contact you if further information or action is required. Learn more about the CRC process.
