Addressing Racism investigation launches new survey for health care workers

Jul 31, 2020

As you may be aware, on June 19, 2020, Health Minister Adrian Dix announced that Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond would lead an independent investigation into racism in the B.C. health care system with a focus on Indigenous-specific discrimination.

Addressing Racism, an Independent Investigation into Indigenous-specific Discrimination in B.C. Health Care, formally began on July 9. More information on the investigation is available at engage.gov.bc.ca/addressingracism.

An online survey has been launched inviting BC health care workers to share their experiences of discrimination in health care services. The new survey was announced via news release on July 31, 2020 as part of Addressing Racism: An Independent Investigation into Indigenous-specific Racism in BC Health Care, led by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. The survey is designed to collect your experiences regarding racism and discrimination and your perspectives on increasing cultural safety in the workplace.

Your voices are a critical part of the process. We encourage you to take part in the survey, which can be found here https://feedback.engage.gov.bc.ca/653748

The survey is open until Aug. 27. Your responses are confidential and will not be shared outside of the investigation team.

If you would like to report a specific incident of racism, you can call the investigation team's toll-free line at 1-888-600-3078 or contact them by email at addressing_racism@gov.bc.ca

BC Health Regulators and its member colleges continue to support this important investigation. "Nurses are the largest group of regulated health professionals in the province and have an important perspective to share with this independent investigation into Indigenous-specific discrimination in B.C.'s health care system. This is our opportunity as health professionals, and as a province, to truly begin addressing the root of the historical injustices that persist in our health care system. I encourage all nurses to complete the survey and share their voices."
