Volunteer opportunity: new LPN exam

Nov 2, 2018

The British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) is seeking input as we develop a new practical nursing (PN) regulatory exam. Specifically, we need the assistance of three BC-registered licensed practical nurses (LPNs) who graduated in 2018; two LPN educators; and one clinical instructor/educator.

This volunteer opportunity is a chance to participate in an important professional development activity: taking part in a two-day Practice Analysis Panel meeting on January 9 and 10, 2019 in Chicago. Travel-related expenses will be covered.

Deadline for applications is 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, 2018.

Developing a new PN exam

BCCNP is working with the College of Nurses of Ontario to develop a new PN entry-to-practice exam, with the assistance of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. We'll be designing the exam to measure an applicant's ability to practise safely, competently, and ethically on entering the profession. We want educators, employers, students, nurses and other stakeholders to contribute to this process.

What will I need to do if I volunteer?

  • Complete pre-work to prepare for the Chicago meeting. For example, recent LPN graduates will be asked to create a log over two days of the activities that they carry out in day-to-day practice.
  • Actively participate in the panel, bringing your expertise related to your sector, patient population and geographical area.

To be considered for participation, applicants must be one of the following:

  • an LPN in clinical practice who graduated in 2018, and who is currently employed in Long Term Care, Community, or Acute Care (hospital)
  • an educator familiar with PN curriculum, or
  • a clinical instructor familiar with LPN practice

In addition, participants will need to…

  • have their employer's permission to be released from work duties to attend the in-person meeting on Jan. 9–10, 2019 in Chicago (traveling to Chicago Jan. 8, returning Jan. 10)
  • be eligible/able to travel to Chicago with up-to-date travel documentation (passport).

... and they must not have…

  • participated in developing a national, provincial or territorial nursing exam within the past two years.

How do I apply?

Interested applicants should email their name and an up-to-date resume to by 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, 2018. Indicate in the email if you are applying as a recent LPN graduate, an educator, or a clinical instructor.

How and when will I know if I am selected?

We'll contact all volunteer applicants, whether they are selected or not, no later than Nov. 23, 2018. We'll provide those who've been selected with next steps at that time.

Who can I or my employer contact if we have any questions?
