BCCNP has been working with regulators across the country to update the
national set of entry-to-practice competencies for LPNs.
These competencies describe the knowledge, skill, judgment and attitude required of beginning practitioners to provide safe competent and ethical nursing care. We use them for several purposes, including: approval of practical nurse education programs, providing advice to nurses on their practice, and in the development of our new regulatory exam for practical nurses
On March 4, 2019, we sent a survey to all practising LPNs in B.C. asking them to provide feedback on the draft competencies. Input from nurses is vital in validating the competencies or making any changes before we make them final. The survey will remain open until March 15, 2019.
If you have any questions about how survey information will be used, or if you're a practising LPN who didin't receive a survey invite, please email Sandra Regan, BCCNP Deputy Registrar, at
