Last month, B.C.'s Minister of Health released the Cayton Report, comprising a review of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC as well as a broader review of health care regulation in our province.
The report outlines recommendations for significant change to the
Health Professions Act and the regulatory framework for health professionals in B.C.. These include changes to the complaints investigation process, support for more amalgamations of colleges, and a proposed structure for improved government oversight for health profession regulatory colleges.
We encourage nurses to review the report, in particular Part Two. The BCCNP board and staff are also reviewing these reports and considering what implications the recommendations may have on our work and mandate. We look forward to collaborating with government and our partners.
The Health Minister has established a steering committee to respond to Part Two of the Cayton Report. Members of the public and health sector stakeholders
are invited to provide written feedback by June 14, 2019. This feedback will be used to assist the Steering Committee to identify and prioritize elements of regulatory modernization that are important to British Columbians and health sector stakeholders.
