Nurse practitioners now able to authorize cannabis for clients

Jun 20, 2019

The BCCNP board on June 19, 2019 approved changes to the Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners: Standards, Limits and Conditions to allow nurse practitioners to provide a medical document to support the medical use of cannabis. This change comes into effect July 22, 2019.

Background

The Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations came into effect on October 17, 2018. The Cannabis Regulations provide clear authority for nurse practitioners to provide a medical document to support the medical use of cannabis.

This change to the limits and conditions rescinds the current limit on ordering or issuing a medical document for cannabis and updates the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice: Prescribing Drugs Standards, Limits and Condition with new standards, limits and conditions for this area of practice.
