The BC College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) has an opening for a temporary Accountant for a 12-month term, with a possibility of extension, in the Operations Department. In this role, you will work closely with the Finance Team to process and complete the full-cycle accounting on a monthly basis and support year-end reporting.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Accountant, is responsible for  optimizing the day-to-day efficiency of the Finance Team, by completing first-level reviews of data entry, providing assistance and ongoing support to the Accounting Clerks and assisting with and overseeing the running of various financial reports, general filing duties, and the reconciliation of account balances and bank statements.

This role collaborates with internal BCCNP staff and contractors, department leaders and managers in order to provide advice and assistance to departments on payment and revenue management, accounting procedures, systems, processes, and compliance controls.

Externally, the Accountant also works with shared services colleges, key financial service providers (including auditors and tax advisors) as required to provide accounting support and to complete compliance tasks.

Role & responsibilities

  • In consultation with the Manager, Finance, coordinate  the month-end full cycle accounting duties for BCCNP and other shared services colleges, including, but not limited to compiling and analyzing financial information to complete month end journal entries, completing and maintaining reconciliations and performing general accounting and variance analysis
  • Coordinate and ensure the timely filing of regulatory reports and returns, including GST, PST returns, Non-Resident and Employer Health tax remittances, CRA tax returns, and the preparation of T4As
  • Ensure financial and information systems produce the appropriate tax receipts for payments received from registrants
  • Reconcile and analyze accruals and the appropriate functioning of pre-authorized payment programs in a timely fashion on a monthly basis
  • In consultation with the Manager, Finance, oversee the reconciliation and maintenance of account receivable and account payable accounts
  • Assist in training and provide support and guidance to the accounting staff
  • Review GL coding for purchases and ensure accuracy in the approval and processing of expense reimbursements
  • In liaison with the Manager, Finance, coordinate the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses, and information reports and ensure all financial deadlines are met in an accurate and timely manner
  • Maintain all appropriate and applicable documentation of accounting processes
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate internal controls
  • Ensure records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards and coordinate and prepare working papers for annual audit and financial statements
  • Report on progress and escalate issues in a timely manner to the Manager, Finance
  • Respond to financial inquiries by gathering, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data
  • Provide back-up support to cover duties of other excluded accounting staff as needed
  • Manage and oversee special projects/initiatives and produce ad-hoc reporting/analysis as assigned

Education & skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in business or related field or other relevant education required; CPA candidate preferred
  • Minimum 5 – 7 years of full cycle accounting experience required
  • Current knowledge of existing and proposed changes to accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations
  • Experience with producing financial information and reporting in real-time through databases, ideally through Microsoft GP Dynamics
  • Strong technical accounting abilities and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated, committed to continuous improvement philosophy and works collaboratively as a team player
  • Professional with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong working relationships at multiple levels of organization
  • Ability to multi-task, manage competing demands, and prioritize proactively under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook Office 365
