Director, Practice Support & Regulatory Learning

BCCNP is recruiting for a senior leadership role in the college. The Director, Practice Support & Regulatory Learning leads a team of staff to achieve the strategic and operational goals and objectives of the BCCNP through the development of standards of practice, practice consultation, and services to registrants.

Interested candidates will have experience with adult learning within virtual digital environments, team building, project management and process mapping/improvement. Candidates will also have experience in nursing or healthcare positions including policy administration, professional practice, and program management at a senior management level.

Who we are

The BC College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) is responsible for regulating all licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, and nurse practitioners in British Columbia. BCCNP works with nurses to: ensure they are registered with the college; to develop, update, and maintain standards of practice; to take action if these standards are not followed, and to implement quality assurance approaches that promote high practice standards.

What you will do

Reporting to the Deputy Registrar, Education, Practice and Regulatory Learning, this role works closely w​ith senior leadership, managers, and staff to provide guidance, learning and application of Standards collaborates with registrants, employers, regulatory organizations, government and other stakeholders within BC and Canada. The Director liaises with statutory and organizational committees, staff and the BCCNP Board (the board). The Director consults and collaborates with registrants, employers, regulatory organizations, government and other stakeholders within B.C. and Canada.

Responsibilities include:

  • In consultation with the Deputy Registrar, Education, Practice, and Regulatory Learning and staff,  the Director, plans, develops and evaluates programs, policies and services related to the dissemination and application of Standards of Practice, regulatory practice consultation, and the development and implementation of programs and services to assist registrants to meet the requirements for practice.
  • In consultation with the Deputy Registrars, Chief Officer and staff, formulates operational and strategic plans for department policies, programs and services.
  • In collaboration with staff, monitors key issues affecting nursing practice and services and supports staff in the development of trend reports, QI initiatives, programs, and other resources to respond to issues. 
  • Leads the development of regulatory learning platforms and services to support regulatory understanding and standards application among registrants and nursing students.
  • Manages and coordinates the work of portfolio. Works with staff to manage change, conflict and ensure ongoing quality improvement/evaluation and adoption of new processes and practices.
  • In consultation with the Deputy Registrar, Education, Practice, and Regulatory Learning, determines staffing needs: recruits staff; provides training; establishes performance expectations; monitors performance and provides ongoing coaching and performance evaluation; and takes corrective action as appropriate.
  • Liaises and collaborates with other programs and departments to implement progressive technologies to ensure Standards of Practice application and regulatory learning.
  • Develops effective working relationships, liaises and consults with stakeholders provincially and nationally related to the Standards and Practice application, and regulatory learning
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Registrar, and Chief Officer, develops, monitors, evaluates the portfolio budget activities, and identifies concerns and course corrections. 
  • Promotes continuous improvement, professional development and goal attainment to develop organizational and leadership capacity in self and others.
  • Provides leadership and ensures overall workplace expectations are aligned with the college's vision, mission and values.
  • Leads or participates in organizational quality assurances activities.
  • Maintains a positive work environment and fosters collaborative and effective working relationships both inside and outside of the department to sustain and enhance the college's desired culture.
  • Builds, fosters and maintains a team performance culture that promotes BCCNP organizational principles.
  • Responsible for managing Education, Practice, and Regulatory Learning in the Deputy Registrar's absence.

Education & ​​skills

  1. Master's degree in nursing, teaching & learning, or health administration. Adult learning within virtual digital environments, team building, project management and process mapping/improvement skills and experience required.
  2. Must hold practising registration in good standing with BCCNP, or be eligible and obtain practicing registration upon hire with BCCNP.
  3. 7 – 10 years experience in increasingly responsible nursing or healthcare positions, including nursing policy/administration, professional practice, and program management at a senior management level.
  4. Demonstrated leadership ability and proven management skills within a unionized and professional environment required.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills, coupled with conflict management and negotiation skills.
  6. Politically astute and culturally sensitive. Ability to establish strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  7. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  8. Strong presentation and facilitation skills. Proven experience managing multiple simultaneous projects.
  9. Ability to identify the developmental needs of employees and to provide coaching mentoring and other assistance.
  10. Strong technical aptitude and ability to leverage technology to drive change. Strong working level knowledge and experience using MS Office.
